Athletics Programme 2012

As part of our commitment to the education of the whole child, RIS offers a top quality athletics programme. RIS recognises the values students gain from participation in a well organised, high quality athletics programme, and is dedicated to excellence in this pursuit.

RIS endeavours to offer its students the best in coaching, facilities and equipment.  The values of sportsmanship, fair play, self-discipline and dedication are highly stressed.  The participation of all interested students is encouraged.  However, because of some restrictions on the number of participants on a team by the rules of the game or association regulations, some limitations are made.

RIS offers a number of competitive sports for the students including, but not limited to - basketball, cricket, football (soccer), netball, rugby, swimming, track and field and volleyball.

The RIS extra curricular activity programme is an extension of this athletic programme and offers important services to the athletic programme.  All parents of RIS athletes, as well as other interested parents, are welcomed and encouraged to become actively involved with the RIS extra curricular and competitive sports programme.

Teams generally practice from 3pm - 4pm or 4pm - 5pm.  Occasional practice sessions may be held outside of these times.  A schedule of practice sessions and fixtures/tournaments will be announced at the beginning of each season and any changes to the general plan will be announced to students and their families as soon as it is known.

The RIS Athletic Department maintains a philosophy that all players will be given meaningful (though not necessarily equal) playing time in all regular season games.  Our coaches recognise that playing time in competition greatly enhances the total development of athletes.  At higher levels of competition playing time should be earned by athletes through their skills, attitude and effort.  At these higher levels, athletes should begin developing an understanding of individual roles within their respective teams.

The RIS students are responsible for maintaining their academic level while participating in the athletic programme.  The students must organise their time to meet the combined demands of after school practices and games and still meet the demands of the RIS academic programme.

Student athletes are expected to meet academic and behavioural expectations in order to represent a RIS sports team. Consideration will be given to students having academic difficulties but who are making positive progress and working to the best of their ability.

Students are responsible for making up any work that they may miss while away from school representing their team and RIS at an athletic competition.

Well done to the RIS U11 Boys football team who finished runner-up in their 6-a-side football tournament, unluckily losing out to BSAK in the final 2-0. Congratulations to all the boys; Luka Clough, Nathan Meakin, Sondre Asheim, Thomas, Jasper Mellish, Jaime Alcazar, Faris Kakish and well done Mr. Chris! It was very pleasing to hear how well the boys did and the positive example our boys set…Faris Kakish was a model captain making sure his players all shook hands, cheered for other teams and picked up their own litter – fantastic!

U16 Boys Football
RIS v AGS

Entertaining AGS in the final league game of the season for the U16 boy’s team, our boys got off to a great start scoring after 34 seconds. AGS then hit back with a penalty minutes later to level the scores once again. AGS then soaked up the pressure from the RIS team and always looked dangerous on the counter attack.

This proved pivotal mid way through the first half when an AGS counter attack led to them taking a two goals to one lead. AGS maintained the lead until half time and our boys went into the break trailing.

The half time team-talk from coach Mr. Mark contained words of encouragement, to be more positive and to not let our unbeaten season slip.

From the start of the second half the RIS boys were much more decisive and created several chances and soon managed to pull back a goal to tie the scores. Moments later AGS attacked and restored their goal advantage, only for our boys to restart and attack again with a long ball towards the AGS goal and a decisive touch over the advancing goalkeeper. Having equalized, the RIS boys sensed victory and pushed for the winner and after some tidy passing the boys created an opportunity for our striker to shoot from a tight angle. The ball drilled into the top corner of the goal and nestled in the top of the net. The boys played out the remaining minutes looking for another goal but defending resolutely to keep AGS at bay. The final whistles went in a thrilling game with our boys jubilant for a 4-3 victory and remain unbeaten this season. Hopefully if results are correct, the u16 boys should be crowned league champions – well done to all involved.

U14 Boys Cricket
RIS v BSAK

Playing 2 ten over games on Friday morning, the U14 boy’s cricket team entertained their counterparts from BSAK. The RIS team, including several under-12 players, showed some fantastic potential in a competitive game but unfortunately the more experienced and older BSAK team came out victorious in both games. T

The BSAK Director of Cricket noted that the RIS team contained 3 or 4 good cricketers and that everyone should be proud of the efforts. With more experience and exposure to cricket through our games ,the RIS team and players should develop into a fine cricketing team. Thank you to Mr. Peter Crowther for his coaching and well done to all the boys involved!

More cricket matches to come after the Spring Break!

Good Finish to U14 Rugby

U14 Rugby

The U14 team finished the season with a good score and classified for the cup final beating BISSAD 45 – 24.

As BISSAD did not have many players, some Raha students volunteered to play with the BISSAD shirt. Everyone had the chance to play and it was quite an entertaining match with a few good tries.

The team, captained by Saud, showed a clear superiority in the first half although in the second half things became a bit tighter with BISSAD scoring four tries.

Congratulations to all the U14 team for all the commitment, effort and teamwork put throughout this season. We are looking forward to the start of the U16 season next year!

U9 Boys Football AYS ‘A’ 2- RIS 3

Playing their penultimate game of the season, the U9 boys travelled the short distance to Al Yasmina School. Taking to the field the boys were anxious about the opposition’s quality of football and soon found themselves trailing by a goal. A resolute defensive game by the RIS boys held the score to 1-0 at half time. With such a large squad to choose from, the u9 coach made several substitutions during the interval to ensure everyone got some valuable game-time. The substitutions worked wonders and within minutes of the restart a Goal by Saif had our boy’s level. The second half continued with our side on the attack and a second goal from Saif midway through the half saw the comeback complete. A further goal from Nicholas made the score 1-3 to RIS, only for AYS to pull a goal back and make for an exciting and frantic finish but we held on for a superb 2-3 win. Well done to everyone on the team.

U14 Boys Rugby
Tuesday 21st February.
AYS v RIS

Sporting the new RIS rugby shirts, our under-14 boys team visited Al Yasmina school to take on their respective team. In another tough match, our boys were defeated by the more experienced team. Our U14’s look forward to their next match on the 13th March.

Wednesday 22nd February
U16 Boys football
RIS 2 – AIS 2

Our U16 boys came from behind to continue their undefeated status in a tense match. AIS started as the better team and took an early lead in the match which remained until half time. The RIS boys lifted their performance in the second half , playing much better passing football and took the game to AIS, creating numerous chances to score.

Unfortunately the AIS team counter-attacked and hit our boys with a second well -taken goal. Determined not to give up our unbeaten status, we dug in and bombarded the AIS goal for the remainder of the game.

Inspirational captain Saif Al Hameli led his team forward and scored a goal to pull us right back into the game. Minutes later, another run from Saif caused the AIS problems, resulting in him being brought down for a penalty. Unluckily, the penalty was missed and we were left with an anxious end to the game to find the equalizing goal.

Finally with three minutes remaining, the breakthrough came: a quick attack from the RIS boys left AIS short at the back  After a goal mouth scramble Zia-e Mustafa and Omar Al Hashimi managed to bundle the ball towards the line with Omar getting the decisive touch to put it in the back of the net.

Well done boys for a spirited comeback & we move on to our final game, still unbeaten!

Goals: Saif Al Hameli & Omar Al Hashimi

U9 Boys Football
Monday 27th February
RIS v AMP

The U9 boys, playing their first of two matches this week, put up a fantastic display to win against Al Muna Primary School. In a competitive first half, the U9 boys took an early lead and held on for some time, only for the AMP team to attack and win a corner, from the resulting corner they managed to score to level the game. As the game went on our boys got stronger in the second half and created more chances and with this, the goals came. The RIS boys ran out eventual winners four goals to one.

Goals: Cameron, Rashed, Nick & Saif

U14 Boys Football
BISAD 2 – RIS 7

In a mirror of the u12 boys score line, a strong performance from our u14 boys saw them ease to victory. In a game with chances a plenty the score could have been more. The u14 team appears to be improving week by week and has now stretched their unbeaten run to three games. The key being more effective teamwork and passing – well done and keep it up! Goal scorers: Mohammed Abousen 2, Will Jonhston 3, Babiker Abdalla and Omar Abdelati.

U14 Boys Rugby Vigorously Challenge BSAK, But Lose 5 to 2

On Tuesday, January 21, the U14 boy’s rugby team visited BSAK for their league fixture. Prior to the game the boys had the opportunity to attend a presentation hosted by former international and professional players Gavin Hastings (Scotland) and Jonathan Davies (Wales). After the presentation with the ex-professionals watching on the action got under way. A well practiced and more experienced BSAK side to the game to our boys and tried to dominate proceedings. Our boys defended well with spirit and put some good plays together and matched their hosts in parts but unfortunately ran out losing 5 tries to two. Our boys take away many positives from the game and some good individual performances.

U12 Boys Rugby Were Runners Up to Older Cambridge Team

The U12 boy’s rugby team hosted Cambridge High School in the quarter finals of the Abu Dhabi Schools Rugby Cup competition. Fielding a young, talented and enthusiastic team made up of our students from grade 4 to 6,
our boys put a fantastic spirited performance against a much bigger and older Cambridge team.
Unfortunately our boys came out runners up losing two tries to six but U12 coach Mr. Pene was
very pleased with how our team played. The u12 team now moves on to play in the semi finals
of the U12 School’s Rugby Plate competition in February.

U14 Boys Suffer Heavy Defeat From Al Yasmina (Wednesday 11th January)

RIS boys travelled to Al Yasmina full of spirit only to come up against a very strong Al Yasmina team. Unfortunately a poor day on the pitch for our boys saw us suffer a very heavy defeat. The boys will no doubt put this behind them, reflect & move forward to focus on their next match verses ACS.

U16 Girls Tie Al Yasmina

Wednesday saw our girls back in action for the first time in 2012 with a trip to Al Yasmina also. In a very evenly matched contest with the defenses on top for both teams and chances few and far between our girls drew 0-0. Notable performances from many of our girls but in particular from Lindsay-Ann Sparrow & Justine Buyse.

U16 Boys Beat BSAK 1-0, Remain Undefeated

One of the biggest fixtures in the U16 Boys Football season saw our boys kick off 2012 by entertaining BSAK. Still unbeaten and looking to maintain the winning streak our boys suffered some bad luck with the news that inspirational captain Saif Al Hameli was unavailable for the game due to a health concern. Also issing several other players due to injuries our squad was still however confident & determined to take the game. In a tough encounter BSAK maintained possession of the ball and put our boys under lots. Our defence stood firm led by stand in captain Mohamed Arar and a fine performance by goalkeeper Andrew Williams kept the BSAK attacks at bay all afternoon. With half-time approaching Oakley Mellish produced some moments of inspiration & skill on the left wing to dance past the BSAK defenders and cooly slot home an excellent finish to give our boys a 1-0 lead at half time. The second half saw more BSAK pressure but we defended hard and created some chances on the break. In the final moment Jackson Clark hit the woodwork with a fine effort on what could be his final appearance before departing for home. In the end our boys hung on to win the match 1-0 and still remain unbeaten – well done all!

Senior Boys Unluckily Lose to AISA, 1-0  (15th January 2012)

A windy afternoon made for difficult conditions for both teams in the senior boys football. In a very close game with nothing too much between the teams, saw chances for both teams to take the lead. At half time the deadlock had still to be broken and the second half continued in much the same way as the first half. With the game entering the dying moments unfortunately AISA attacked and scored to take the lead. RIS boys tried to mount attacks to find the equalizing goal in the final stages but unfortunately ran out of time and very unluckily lost the match 0-1.

U9 Boys Defeat CIS 2 to 1 (16th January 2012)

The U9 Boys started the year off eagerly by taking an early lead against the visiting CIS U9 team with the goal coming from Nikolas. Our U9 boys continued to attack for much of the first half but alas could not find the second goal but pleasingly took a one nil lead into the half time break. At the start of the second half the CIS team came out much stronger and managed to score a goal to level the scores. Our boys showed some great play and determination to look for another goal and were rewarded when Tariq scored the second RIS goal. The final score RIS 2- CIS 1 – well done to all those involved.
