Overview of the Learning Support Programme at RIS
The purpose of the Learning Support Programme at RIS is not to provide totally individualized programmes for identified students; rather, the purpose is to provide assistance to identified students both in and out of the classroom. This would enhance their chance of meeting the expectations of the PYP and MYP academic programme to the highest degree.
One of the most important features of the programme is the shared responsibility for the students among learning support teacher, classroom teachers, parents, and the student him/herself.
Referrals can be made by teachers, parents or the Senior Management Team through filling out a comprehensive referral form. The Learning Support Teacher collects information about any referred student through talking to teachers, parents, carrying out observations, and students’ interviews. Some recommendations and strategies are provided to parents and/or teachers and then a referral for an educational psychologist is made.
After the child undergoes a psycho-educational assessment and is identified as having a learning difficulty, the learning support teacher starts designing the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), taking into consideration the IEP Team participation. The IEP team usually consists of teachers, parents, therapists and students. IEPs are vital documents as they verify each identified student’s assessment results, present level of performance, services and accommodations and individual goals. The learning support teacher works together with regular teachers to accomplish IEP goals throughout the academic year.
A very important role of the learning support teacher is to work closely with parents who are in need of support and awareness in learning difficulties issues. Ongoing communication with parents regarding their children’s needs and performance at school is a continuous process that enhances identified students’ successful experiences.
