'Often it was not in school, but outside of it - in extracurricular activities- that calling appeared.' -James Hillman, psychologist
Right from the beginning, RIS has placed a huge emphasis on its EC programme. It is often shared activities outside of regularly scheduled school hours that create the strongest memories, and the activities offered by the school are many and varied.
In the past two years alone, the programme has offered dozens of clubs to be involved in for students of all ages, from Grade 1 upwards.
The EC programme runs in 2 blocks of time throughout the year, which gives students and teachers alike chances to try new activities. Some programmes run all year, while some are offered at certain times of the year. Participation, while strongly encouraged, is completely voluntary. Approximately 80% of eligible students try at least one ECP activity in any given year.
The EC programme also coordinates with the Athletics Programme and External Clubs, to provide as many quality experiences for Raha International School students as possible.
Activities are organized and offered by teachers, each of whom has their own interests and areas of expertise. A number of parent volunteers and senior students also actively participate and help out, to the benefit of everybody! The programme is constantly evolving, ensuring new and interesting opportunities for the students. The vast majority of the programmes are offered free of charge.
In 2012, students are offered more than three dozen extra-curricular activities. Among the new extra-curricular activities offered at Raha beginning the week of January 15, 2012 are the craft of card-making and card design, kite-surfing, kayaking, golf, junior chorus, Arabic art and calligraphy, and capoeira (an art form involving coordination, sense of balance, acrobatics, rhythm, playing instruments, singing, concentration, and respect for others).
These new clubs are now added to the mainstays:
- Language Clubs -- Danish, German, Arabic, Dutch, Afrikaans, Korean, Spanish, and Irish.
- Creative clubs -- Piano, senior school orchestra, super variety dance, crafty stories, jewelry making, choir, senior school choir, and robotics.
